SAN FRANCISCO -- Will Smith became the first major free agent to come off the board earlier this month after agreeing to a three-year, $40 million deal with the Braves, but he’ll have one final opportunity to represent the Giants on the inaugural All-MLB Team.

Smith was the lone Giants player to earn a spot on the 2019 ballot, which was released Monday by Major League Baseball.

The selection process for the 2019 All-MLB Team began Monday and runs through 2 p.m. PT on Dec. 3, with 50 percent of the vote coming from fans and 50 percent coming from a panel of experts.

Fans can vote once every 24 hours between now and when voting ends next Tuesday. The inaugural All-MLB Team will be announced on Dec. 10 at baseball’s annual Winter Meetings in San Diego.

There will be a first team and second team All-MLB, and voters are asked only to consider performance during the regular season when casting their ballots. Each team will include one selection at each position (including designated hitter and three outfielders, regardless of specific outfield position), five starting pitchers and two relievers.

Smith emerged as one of the National League’s most dominant closers in 2019, earning his first All-Star selection after posting a 2.76 ERA over 63 appearances for the Giants. He converted 34 of 38 save opportunities and racked up 96 strikeouts over 65 1/3 innings in his final season before free agency.

“He’s been a joy,” former Giants manager Bruce Bochy said in June. “We put him in that role last year, and he did a really nice job. He’s even done a better job this year. He’s been flawless. You look at what this man has gone through, with Tommy John [surgery]. He really hasn’t been a closer before, up until last year when we gave him that role. He’s run with it this year. I couldn’t be happier for him.”

The Giants had interest in retaining Smith and extended the 30-year-old left-hander a one-year, $17.8 million qualifying offer, but he declined it to sign with his hometown Braves.
