SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy met with left-hander Matt Moore on Tuesday and stated flatly that the embattled starter will take his regularly scheduled turn in the rotation on Sunday at Washington.
"He'll be starting four days from now," Bochy said after Tuesday's 6-3 victory over the Cubs. "He's so close to being who he was last year. The best way to come out of something is pitch."
Moore, who won six of his last eight starts in 2016, lost his fifth decision in a row Monday, when he allowed five runs and eight hits in six innings as the Giants fell to the Cubs, 5-3. That left him with a 3-12 record and a 5.88 ERA.
"His comment was he'd love to pitch today," Bochy said, "[because] he was so mad at himself for some pitches last night."
Though Moore often displays good stuff -- he has struck out 111 batters in 128 2/3 innings -- he has struggled against left-handed batters, whom he conceivably should be able to subdue with regularity. Instead, their slash line against Moore is .396/.459/.640.
Gomez exits early: Bochy said second baseman Miguel Gomez is on day-to-day playing status with discomfort in his right knee. Gomez left Tuesday's game after grounding out in the first inning and telling Bochy, "I can't run 100 percent."

Melancon continues rehab: Giants right-hander Mark Melancon pitched a scoreless first inning for Class A Advanced San Jose on Tuesday as he continued his recovery from a pronator strain in his throwing arm.
Melancon yielded a single and struck out two batters, one swinging and one looking, in San Jose's game at Stockton.
Melancon is expected to return to San Francisco for further evaluation Wednesday.
