OAKLAND -- The Giants counted off three home runs Tuesday night, including a two-run shot from Nick Hundley in a five-run first inning that propelled them to a commanding 10-4 victory over the A's at the Coliseum, evening this Bay Bridge Series at one game apiece.
"Any time those guys are out there swinging like that, you just sit back, enjoy it and watch it," said Giants starter Jeff Samardzija, who improved to 6-11 while throwing a season-high 118 pitches. "Especially in these [American League] games where you're not hitting anyways. You want to have quick innings to get those guys back in the dugout."
Brandon Belt added a solo homer in the fourth inning, and Hunter Pence joined the party with a three-run blast in the sixth -- both coming against A's reliever Michael Brady, who was summoned early after lefty starter Sean Manaea was lifted at the conclusion of the third inning.
Manaea allowed six runs and nine hits in that span, but just two were earned, while Samardzija picked up the win against his former team after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits -- including Matt Joyce's two-run homer in the fifth -- across eight innings.

"It's really, really disappointing," said Manaea, who had completed at least five innings in his previous 14 starts. "I wanted to keep that good streak going, but unfortunately tonight just wasn't my night. I definitely got smacked around a little bit. They were squaring up balls, and it just seemed like every ball just found the grass or got by somebody."
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said although Samardzija didn't have his best stuff, he kept pushing forward. He surrendered one hit during the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Samardzija now has three eight-inning games, most among Giants starters.
"Shows you what a horse he is," Bochy said. "We can keep running him out there to give some guys in the bullpen a break. Great job on his part."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Giants capitalize:Gorkys Hernandez and Kelby Tomlinson staked the Giants to a quick 1-0 lead with back-to-back hits to christen the game. Then Belt stepped to the plate and sent a ground ball toward first baseman Yonder Alonso for what should have been the first out of the inning. But Alonso bobbled the ball for a rare error, leading to four unearned runs in the frame, which featured Hundley's two-run homer in his first at-bat as a designated hitter. Manaea needed 40 pitches to get through the inning, finishing the laborious outing at 70.
"Just one of those nights where he was off a little bit," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "We gave him some extra outs in the first, but usually he's getting a few more swings and misses and really wasn't getting many. Just one of those rare outings for him where he doesn't get you deep in the game. The first inning took a lot out of him, and we didn't help him out defensively."

Walk this way: Joyce's homer cut San Francisco's lead to three runs in the fifth, before the Giants pulled away in the sixth. After Tomlinson led off the inning with a triple, Brady held him at third by striking out Belt. That's when the A's opted to intentionally walk Buster Posey, denying him a chance to collect his fourth hit of the night. Pence made them pay, though, firing a three-run homer to right-center field for his eighth of the season -- all of them coming on the road.
"He's been in a little funk with smothering the ball on grounders," Bochy said. "He's got big power. You guys have probably watched batting practice. His timing was, I thought, good tonight. Off that right-hander, to go right-center, that means he's staying on the ball."

Giants: San Francisco welcomes the Bay Bridge Series to its backyard Wednesday when the A's visit AT&T Park for a 7:15 p.m. PT game. Matt Moore (3-10, 5.74 ERA) will start for the Giants. The left-hander is 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA in four starts against the A's.
A's: The A's will have rookie right-hander Daniel Gossett (2-6, 5.74 ERA) on the mound when they cross the Bay Bridge on Wednesday and continue this four-game Interleague set within the confines of AT&T Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. PT.
