Friday and Saturday’s games between the Padres and Giants at Petco Park were postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test in the Giants organization, Major League Baseball announced on Friday night.

“Following a positive test for COVID-19 in the San Francisco Giants’ organization, tonight’s and tomorrow’s scheduled games between the Giants and the host San Diego Padres at Petco Park have been postponed out of an abundance of caution and to allow for additional testing and contact tracing to be conducted,” MLB’s statement read. “Major League Baseball will continue to provide updates as necessary.”

Both clubs lined up on the field for the national anthem, but neither team took the field. The game was scheduled to begin at 6:10 p.m. PT, but instead, players from both teams lingered near their dugouts.

After the Padres announced that Friday’s game had been postponed, club personnel gathered in section 117 -- spread out several seats apart to socially distance -- as they addressed their next steps. Giants players and coaches received an update from general manager Scott Harris, with several players then exiting the field with takeaway dinners.

This is the first postponement to impact the National League West this year. The Giants had not had a positive COVID-19 test since they completed their intake testing during Summer Camp on July 6.

Both clubs have a scheduled off-day on Thursday, and they’re also scheduled to play their final series of the season against each other at Oracle Park from Sept. 25-27.
