DENVER -- The Giants were an arm short in the bullpen Wednesday night, and will likely be so at least through the end of the three-game set concluding in Colorado Thursday. Reliever Sergio Romo was unavailable with a "tender" elbow and will fly back to San Francisco to get it checked out on Thursday.
"He said he felt fine last night," manager Bruce Bochy said after Wednesday's 10-6 loss to the Rockies. "He got up today and it was a little achy. For his presence of mind, peace of mind, he needs to get it looked at, so that's what we're going to do. Check it out tomorrow and then we'll know what's the plan."
While a roster move may be imminent, Bochy seemed inclined to hope for the best, noting Romo's past history with minor issues that solve themselves by slowing down for a day or two. After the series in Colorado, the Giants play a three-game weekend set in Los Angeles before returning home on Monday.
"We know Sergio occasionally has [previously] flared up," Bochy said. "Usually he just needs a couple days and he's fine, and that's what we're hoping for. We'll know more tomorrow what's going on with him."
Romo has pitched in four games this season, allowing one hit (a homer) and one run in 3 1/3 innings while walking one and striking out one. He has a 2.70 ERA.
