Pirates quintet needs All-Star boost

Polanco, Jaso jump into ballot rankings with Cutch, Marte, Harrison

June 8th, 2016

PITTSBURGH -- Three Pirates held their ground and two more entered the mix on the latest National League voting update for the 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot, which was released Wednesday by Major League Baseball.
All three Pittsburgh outfielders are among the top 15 vote-getters, as Gregory Polanco (222,348) joined Andrew McCutchen (421,788) and Starling Marte (324,950) on the list. Josh Harrison (225,668) remains fifth among NL second baseman, and John Jaso (210,748) appeared in the top five for the first time, ranking fifth at first base.

McCutchen is seventh among NL outfielders and has the most votes of any Pirates player. Marte is holding steady at No. 10, while Polanco is 15th.
Harrison ranks well behind Cubs second baseman Ben Zobrist (1,140,808 votes), the Nationals' Daniel Murphy, the Mets' Neil Walker and the Giants' Joe Panik. Jaso has a sizable margin to overcome if he wants to catch up to Paul Goldschmidt's 350,308 vote total.
Cubs players lead the position player balloting at every spot other than behind the plate, where Yadier Molina comes in slightly ahead of Buster Posey. Three Cubs outfielders -- leader Dexter Fowler, No. 4 Jason Heyward and No. 6 Jorge Soler -- have received more votes than McCutchen.
Polanco and Marte rank fifth and sixth, respectively, in FanGraphs' Wins Above Replacement among NL outfielders. McCutchen, off to a slow start and battling a sore thumb, is 17th.
