PEORIA, Ariz. -- Jean Segura continued his torrid spring Tuesday for Arizona, but the Padres rallied to force an 8-8 tie on the strength of a monster day from catcher Austin Hedges.
Segura had three hits and drove in two runs at the Peoria Sports Complex. He is now hitting .692 with nine hits in his first 13 at-bats for his new team.
But the Padres, who trailed 6-1 at one point, didn't go quietly. They got two home runs from Hedges -- a two-run home run in the second inning and a three-run shot in the sixth inning. Hedges also threw out Segura twice on stolen-base attempts.
"I'm a fan of two home runs, it's not hard to like that," said Padres manager Andy Green. "He's been working really hard, and I think you're starting to see some of that pay off right now. He's done a great job with [hitting coach] Alan Zinter."
Peter O'Brien, trying to win a job on the D-backs' bench, drilled a two-run homer as part of a six-run second inning against San Diego starter Brandon Maurer. Jake Lamb also went deep for Arizona.
Maurer, who starred in relief last season but is being moved to the rotation, got one out in the second inning before reaching his pitch limit. He allowed five runs on two hits with three walks in 1 1/3 innings.
Arizona pitcher Zack Godley allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits over three innings. He had two strikeouts. Godley is in contention for the No. 5 spot in the rotation.
Cory Spangenberg, Jon Jay and Yangervis Solarte each had two hits for the Padres.
D-BACKS UP NEXT:Zack Greinke will make his second start of the spring for the D-backs on Wednesday as they play host to the Padres at Salt River Fields at 1:10 p.m. MST on MLB.TV. Greinke, who was signed to a $206.5 million deal in December, will be followed to the mound by Tyler Wagner. Wagner is competing for the No. 5 spot in the Arizona rotation.
PADRES UP NEXT: The Padres head to Salt River Fields in Scottsdale on Wednesday for a 12:10 p.m. PT game against the D-backs. Colin Rea makes his second start of the spring. He tossed two scoreless innings the last time out against the Royals. Rea is in competition for one of the two open spots at the back end of the team's starting rotation.
