Reds right-hander Hunter Greene is set to undergo surgery on his right elbow, Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall told reporters on Friday.
Greene was placed on the 15-day IL on Wednesday after experiencing soreness in his right elbow during his bullpen session on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old missed the first three months of the season while recovering from arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow on March 11.
Greene flew to Los Angeles for a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Thursday.
Greene is 2-2 with a 6.83 ERA through five starts this season. In a two-year span from 2024-25, he established himself as one of the game’s best young pitchers, posting a 2.76 ERA with 10.5 K/9 in 45 starts while making the NL All-Star team in 2024.
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 Draft, Greene has struggled to stay healthy in his short big league career. He’s been on the IL at least once in each of his first five MLB seasons, and also underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018 while in the Minor Leagues.
