At 44 years old, Ichiro Suzuki is still looking to play another season in the Majors.
The veteran outfielder hopes to sign with another Major League team after the Marlins declined a $2 million club option on his contract for the 2018 season, according to the Kyodo News.
"I feel like a big dog at a pet shop that hasn't been sold. Of course, I want to play baseball next year," Ichiro said while in his hometown of Toyoyama for the closing ceremony of the Ichiro Cup baseball tournament.
Ichiro saw the fewest plate appearances of his Major League career last season with the Marlins, hitting .255/.318/.332 in 215 trips to the plate. He started just 22 games while coming off the bench 114 times. Before the 2017 season, he said he wanted to continue playing until he's 50.
A member of the 3,000-hit club and a 17-time All-Star between MLB and Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball, Ichiro is a virtual certainty to enter the Hall of Fame when eligible.
When asked if he would consider returning to Japan to play baseball, Ichiro responded somewhat vaguely.
"When you use the word 'possibility,' there are many things -- it means anything is possible as long as it's not zero," he said.
