SAN FRANCISCO -- Indians left-hander Boone Logan dropped to a knee at AT&T Park, grimaced in pain and is now more then likely headed to the disabled list.
During the eighth inning of Cleveland's 5-4 loss to the Giants on Wednesday, Logan felt a sharp pain in his arm after firing a fastball to Brandon Belt that resulted in a walk. Logan sustained an injury to his left lat muscle and will undergo an MRI exam on Thursday to gather more information. Manager Terry Francona hinted that a DL stint was the probable scenario.
"It got him pretty good," Francona said. "We'll get him looked at [Thursday]. We'll know more. But it's just hard to imagine him going down like that and having it not be something where he's not going to miss some time."
Following the pitch -- a 95-mph four-seamer and Logan's 17th pitch of the game -- the left-hander was in obvious pain and was swiftly met on the mound by head athletic trainer James Quinlan. The Indians wasted little time in removing Logan from the game. The pitcher was at least a little relieved that it did not appear that he injured his shoulder.
"When the ball came out of my hand," Logan said, "I just felt a pull in the upper lat area, where it connects to the shoulder, I guess. It's not a shoulder, it's a lat. I've never pulled anything before -- ever. It didn't feel very good. Now I know what it feels like -- not fun. It's probably not going to be fun, but we're going to find out [Thursday]."
Logan has had five DL stints in the previous three years due to a variety of shoulder and elbow issues.
The Indians signed the 32-year-old Logan over the offseason to a one-year, $6.5 million deal that includes a $7 million team option for 2018. In 38 appearances this season, the lefty has turned in a 4.71 ERA with 28 strikeouts against nine walks in 21 innings, primarily as a lefty specialist.
