CLEVELAND -- The Indians are due to exchange proposed salary figures with their remaining arbitration-eligible players on Friday. Cleveland managed to sidestep that part of the annual process with right-handed setup man Bryan Shaw.
On Thursday evening, the Indians avoided arbitration with Shaw with a one-year contract worth $2.75 million for the upcoming season. Shaw projects to serve as the primary setup man for closer Cody Allen, who is one of the four players still eligible for arbitration with Cleveland this winter.
As of right now, the Indians are scheduled to exchange salary figures with Allen, right fielder Lonnie Chisenhall, reliever Jeff Manship and starter Josh Tomlin before Friday's 1 p.m. ET deadline. If necessary, arbitration hearings will be held from Feb. 1-21, though the two sides can reach a deal at any point before a player's hearing.
Shaw -- acquired from Arizona as part of the nine-player, three-team trade involving the Reds and D-backs on Dec. 11, 2012 -- has developed into one of the most durable relief arms in baseball. Over the past two seasons combined, the righty ranks first in the American League and second in the Majors with 154 appearances, and he ranks 10th among big league relievers with 140 1/3 innings in that span.
Last season, Shaw followed up his 80-game effort in 2014 by posting a 2.95 ERA in 74 appearances out of the Tribe's bullpen. Shaw has spent three of his five Major League seasons with the Indians, posting a 2.76 ERA with a .228 opponents' average across the last two campaigns combined.
