Indians call up pitchers Rodriguez, Anderson

April 13th, 2019

KANSAS CITY -- The Indians depleted their bullpen Friday night, using six of their eight relievers after Carlos Carrasco lasted for just two outs in the team’s 8-1 loss to the Royals. To add some extra depth in the ‘pen, the Tribe needed to dip into its farm system.

The Indians announced prior to Saturday’s contest at Kauffman Stadium that right-handed pitchers Cody Anderson and Jefry Rodriguez were recalled from Triple-A Columbus. To make room on the 25-man roster, the club optioned right-hander Jon Edwards and outfielder Jordan Luplow to Triple-A.

Rodriguez’s announcement was expected, as he arrived in Kansas City on Friday in preparation for his spot start on Saturday in place of an injured Mike Clevinger (upper back strain).

After missing the past two seasons due to Tommy John surgery, Anderson has been on a three-inning pitch program for his last five Minor League starts, so he wasn’t an option to start Saturday, but the righty gives the Indians relief depth if needed.

“Well, we’re just trying to protect our bullpen, mostly for [Saturday night],” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “Obviously you want to win the game, but if there’s a short exit for a number of reasons -- we had to go in early last night -- [Anderson’s] stretched out to three [innings], so he could probably go four. That could protect our bullpen, and it can be almost like a start for him because we do want him to continue to get stretched out.”

Anderson said he was surprised to get the call at 11:56 p.m. ET after the Clippers’ rainout in Durham, N.C. He hasn’t made a big league appearance since Sept. 28, 2016.

“[I’ve been] more just trying to focus on what I needed to do to eventually get back here,” Anderson said. “It just came sooner than I thought.

“I mean I’m just ready to get out there and get an inning or two under my belt and just try to help the team win because you spend a lot of time sitting there, watching. It’s a rush of emotions. I’m pretty sure it’ll hit me eventually. Right now, I just want to get the job done.”

Edwards made six appearances for the Indians this season, allowing one earned run on a solo homer through five innings (1.80 ERA) and recording three strikeouts.

“He looked a little tentative,” Francona said. “I think last year when we got him here, he had gotten on his roll in Triple-A. Because they were saying for a while in Triple-A he was kind of pitching like that, too. Then he got on a roll and we got him and man, he just kept going. We told him that last night. We’re like, ‘Hey, go get on your roll and we’ll get you back here.’ And I think he understood that, for in the long run, this will be good for him.”

Luplow played in seven games, making three starts in right, and hit .200 with two walks and eight strikeouts. The Indians are left with outfielders Jake Bauers, Leonys Martin, Tyler Naquin and Greg Allen on the current 25-man roster, but Carlos Gonzalez will be activated on Sunday.

“It was hard because sometimes somebody’s a casualty of a game like that, and we just told him that,” Francona said of his conversation with Luplow. “Now, I do think it’ll be good for him to get at-bats because he’s young and needs to play, but sometimes there are casualties when a pitcher goes less than an inning. That’s just the way the game is and sometimes it’s unfair.”
