CHICAGO -- With Boone Logan out of the Indians' bullpen picture for the foreseeable future, Cleveland used his roster spot to its advantage Saturday.

Cleveland transferred Logan from the 10-day to the 60-day disabled list, vacating a spot on the 40-man roster to claim right-hander Diego Moreno off waivers from the Rays. The Indians then optioned Moreno to Triple-A Columbus, adding another layer of depth behind the Major League bullpen.

"We're starting to get a little thinner on Major League guys," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "So it makes sense to add inventory, or however you want to say it."

Logan, who sustained a strained left lat in an appearance against the Giants on July 19, will not be eligible for activation until Sept. 19. Francona noted Friday that Logan received a second opinion on his injury and is now contemplating the next step, which could be surgery.

In 38 games this season, Logan posted a 4.71 ERA with 28 strikeouts against nine walks in 21 innings, which he spent mostly as a lefty specialist. Last winter, Cleveland signed the 32-year-old left-hander to a one-year contract worth $6.5 million, adding a team option for the 2018 season.

Moreno, 30, was designated for assignment Thursday by Tampa Bay, which needed to clear room on its roster following the acquisitions of Lucas Duda and Dan Jennings.

The right-handed reliever relies on a fastball-changeup mix, with a slider mixed in. Moreno, who missed two months between May and July with a right shoulder issue, has a 5.06 ERA with 14 strikeouts against five walks in 16 career innings in the Majors. He turned in a 4.76 ERA in five games for the Rays this year, and posted a 1.04 ERA in 17 1/3 Minor League innings between Triple-A and Class A Advanced.
