Indians' streak compared with other sports

September 12th, 2017

The Tribe notched its 22nd consecutive victory on Thursday, defeating the Royals 3-2 in 10 innings at Progressive Field. Here is a look at how the Indians' streak stacks up against the best in other major American sports.
The Major League record is 26 straight wins, achieved by the 1916 Giants.
Below is a look at how the Indians' streak stacks up against the best in other major American sports.
NCAA women's basketball
Connecticut recently completed a historic run of 111 consecutive wins. The Huskies' streak came to an end on March 31, 2017, with a loss to Mississippi in the NCAA Women's Tournament semifinals. Within that stretch, the 2014 Huskies matched the 2012 Baylor Bears' single-season record with a 40-0 season.
NCAA men's basketball
The 2014-15 Kentucky Wildcats were a perfect 34-0 and then won each of their first four NCAA Tournament games to extend their record-setting streak to 38 games before falling to Wisconsin in the Final Four. Since the postseason tournament was established in 1939, eight teams have completed unbeaten seasons but none extended those streaks to 38 consecutive games in a single season. The record spanning multiple years is 88 by the UCLA Bruins from 1970-74.
NBA
The Los Angeles Lakers went on a remarkable 33-game run during their 1971-72 championship season that saw them establish an NBA record that still stands today. The closest any team has come in a single season since was in 2012-13 when the Miami Heat won 27 in a row. The Golden State Warriors also recently challenged the record with a 28-game win streak between the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.
NHL
The Pittsburgh Penguins own the NHL's longest streak of 17 games, set during the 1992-93 season. The longest undefeated streak, however, goes to the 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers, who went 35 games without taking a loss.
NFL
The 2007 Patriots became the first team in NFL history to win 16 games in a regular season. (The Miami Dolphins went 14-0 in 1972 when the season was shorter.) The Patriots remain the only team to accomplish the feat, eventually going 18-0 before being upset by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts own the longest multi-season streak with 23 regular-season wins between 2008-09. If you include the postseason, that distinction again goes to the Patriots for their 21 consecutive wins from 2003-04.
NCAA football
Undefeated seasons aren't uncommon in college football, but only five teams have gone 14-0: 2002 Ohio State, 2009 Boise State and Alabama, 2010 Auburn and 2013 Florida State. The Oklahoma Sooners hold the record for the longest streak spanning multiple seasons at 47 games from 1953-57, a stretch that included two national championships.
MLS
The LA Galaxy own the records for both the longest single-season win streak (12 games in 1996) and the longest streak spanning multiple years (15 games from 1997-98). The Galaxy fell four games short of matching FC Dallas (2010) and Columbus Crew SC (2004-05) for the longest unbeaten stretch in a single season in MLS history (19 games).
