GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The newest member of the Reds, infielder Scooter Gennett, had familiarity of the Reds after spending four seasons in the National League Central with the Brewers.
But on the final day of Spring Training on Wednesday, the day after Cincinnati claimed him off waivers from Milwaukee, Gennett moved quickly to get acclimated.
"I've talked to a lot of these guys before at second base. You meet guys and talk to them," Gennett said. "But actually being around them and getting to know them is different. That's what's important for me right now, getting to know my teammates, the coaching staff and everybody involved in making things work."
In the Reds' 9-6 loss to the Indians, Gennett entered the game in the top of the fifth inning at second base. In the bottom half against Andrew Miller, the lefty hitter slugged a home run in his very first at-bat.
In the top of the fifth, Gennett robbed Michael Brantley of a base hit.

"A homer to left-center and a tremendous play up the middle. He's very athletic," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "He just did a very nice job. It must be something for him to be playing away from the Brewers for the first time. It's a different opportunity and a new team, but there has to be some strangeness to it."
Gennett, 26, will be part of the Reds' four-man bench. A native of Lebanon, Ohio, just outside of Cincinnati, he grew up as a fan of his hometown team and often attended games at Riverfront Stadium/Cinergy Field. He has 19 first cousins in the area, and he heard from many of them after learning he was joining the Reds.
"I got here as quick as I could, met some of the staff and some of the players," Gennett said. "These first couple of days is just getting to know everybody. I'm settling in. I'm super excited. When I found out, it was special. Growing up a Reds fan and seeing them play for so long and now getting an opportunity to play for them is really cool."
