Amazin' catch nets J.D. Davis Play of the Week

August 26th, 2019

Back, back, back went, and now up, up, up he comes with the MLB Play of the Week honors presented by W.B. Mason.

Doing his best Willie Mays impression, Davis made the nearly blind over-the-shoulder basket catch to rob the Indians’ Greg Allen of extra bases during a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning last Thursday. It sent Citi Field into a frenzy, his teammates into unadulterated awe and helped the Mets complete an equal parts impressive and important sweep of Cleveland.

The emerging Davis did his part on both sides that series. A day before his jaw-dropping catch, he notched a walk-off single off Brad Hand to keep the Mets afloat in the National League Wild Card race -- a race made tighter after New York was swept by Atlanta this weekend.

But regardless of how it unfolds, Davis serves as a microcosm for the Mets' late-season revival. And his recognition this week comes seven days after he was on the wrong end of Play of the Week, when a sure-homer off his bat was caught at the wall by Ronald Acuna Jr. to earn the Braves star the award.
