The Red Sox got Jackie Bradley Jr. back from the disabled list on Friday, but Brock Holt is headed to the 10-day DL due to vertigo, the team announced.
Boston placed Holt on the DL before its series opener against the Orioles as the corresponding move for Bradley's official activation from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket. Xander Bogaerts was out of Friday's starting lineup due to a sore left thumb, though he entered the Red Sox's 2-0 loss to the Orioles in the bottom of the eighth to play shortstop. Manager John Farrell said before the game that Bogaerts could return to the starting lineup as early as Saturday.
Bradley had been on the DL since April 11 with a right knee sprain. In two rehab games with Pawtucket, the 27-year-old center fielder went 1-for-5 with a home run and two walks. Prior to his injury, he had gone 4-for-14 with a triple, two RBIs and a stolen base in four games for the Red Sox.
Holt was just 2-for-15 in his first six games of the season. The 28-year-old utility player hit .255 with seven home runs and 34 RBIs in 94 games for the Red Sox last season.
Holt said that congestion in his head (with fluids) has been an issue in recent days. Farrell said a virus could have triggered all this, and the Red Sox are looking at sending Holt on a rehab assignment early next week.
"[I will] try to go take some time off and get this thing right so I can get back out there," Holt said Friday. "I'm still going to be hitting batting practice and doing stuff like that. Hopefully, a little time of not playing games will help me kind of settle down a little bit."
Farrell said that Bogaerts tried swinging in the cage on Friday with three or four different types of protective equipment. However, his swing felt affected and there was some discomfort.
"Defensively he's full go, but hopefully [he] just needs a day to get four or five rounds of treatment to be in a position to play tomorrow," Farrell said.
