deGrom ready for 4th rehab start today

July 27th, 2022

NEW YORK -- If everything goes smoothly Wednesday afternoon for Jacob deGrom, he may not need to see the Minor Leagues again.

The Mets haven’t said for certain that Wednesday will be the final Minor League rehab start for deGrom, who hasn’t pitched all season due to a stress reaction in his right scapula. But the general assumption is that if deGrom comes away from his outing at Triple-A Syracuse healthy, he’ll be able to return to the Mets the following week -- likely Aug. 2 in Washington.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner will look to show he’s healthy in front of a national streaming audience, with first pitch against Omaha scheduled for 12:05 p.m. ET and airing free on MLB.TV.

Over his first three Minor League rehab starts, deGrom threw 8 2/3 innings with 15 strikeouts, one walk and zero earned runs, frequently hitting triple digits on the radar gun. But following the last of them on July 14, deGrom experienced a bout of irregular shoulder soreness, which prompted the Mets to push back a scheduled simulated game by two days. He eventually threw 60 pitches in that outing and reported a clean bill of health afterward, putting him on track to throw around 75 pitches on Wednesday.

That means that if deGrom remains healthy, he could throw up to around 90 pitches in his season debut. The Mets would likely give him an extra day of rest before that one, which lines him up for Aug. 2 against the Nationals.

It has been nearly 13 months since deGrom’s last MLB outing, due to an elbow injury that sidelined him for the entire second half of last season as well as the shoulder problem that the Mets diagnosed toward the end of Spring Training. During his last healthy run in the Majors, deGrom went 7-2 with a 1.08 ERA in 15 starts.
