CHICAGO -- Jacob Arrieta, who went 4-1 with a 1.21 ERA in six starts last month, was named the National League Pitcher of the Month for August on Sunday.
Arrieta posted the lowest ERA in the Majors during the month. The right-hander leads the Cubs with 14 wins.
"Our staff in general has been pitching really well, but him especially," Cubs catcher Alex Avila said. "With the movement and the deception he has in his delivery , when he's locating, he's one of the toughest pitchers to square up as a hitter."
In Arrieta's last start against the Pirates, he posted his eighth quality start in nine outings since the All-Star break.
Arrieta opened the month against the D-backs on Aug. 2 and struck out eight over seven innings, giving up one earned run on three hits. He held opponents to a .201 batting average against.
This is the fourth time Arrieta, the 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner, has won a Pitcher of the Month Award. He also did so in back-to-back months in 2015 (August and September) and in April 2016.
