Cano, Wilson, Nimmo on path to rejoining big league club

NEW YORK -- The Mets activated Jeff McNeil from the injured list before Tuesday’s game, and they also provided updates on multiple players who are working their way back.

They did not activate Robinson Cano from the injured list, but he did work out Tuesday. The second baseman has been on the injured list since May 23 with a strained left quad.

Manager Mickey Callaway said the team is taking it day by day with Cano and his injury, but did say that “he’s progressing nicely.”

Another Mets player working his way back from injury is reliever Justin Wilson, who is on the injured list with left elbow soreness for the second time this season. He threw a bullpen session Monday, and he said before Tuesday’s game that he felt good. He’ll throw again Wednesday or Thursday.

Callaway said that the team will assess where Wilson is at to ascertain what the next step will be.

Brandon Nimmo, who has been on the injured list since May 22 with neck stiffness, is also progressing well, according to Callaway. Nimmo participated in full activities Tuesday.

“[He’s] feeling better and better every day,” Callaway said.

Dominic Smith, who injured his right thumb on a swing during Saturday’s game in Arizona, had an MRI on Monday which revealed a strain. Smith was not in the lineup Tuesday, but was available to pinch-hit.

“It was probably the best scenario, given that he did sprain his thumb a little bit on that awkward swing,” Callaway said.
