A's linked to reliever Familia in trade talks

July 21st, 2018

OAKLAND -- The A's are working toward finalizing a trade with the Mets that would further strengthen their sturdy bullpen.
Sources indicated to MLB.com on Friday evening that right-hander could soon be Oakland-bound; combined with All-Star closer and rookie phenom , they would form a three-headed relief monster for a club making a surprising playoff push.
The A's entered the day just three games back of the Mariners for the second American League Wild Card spot.
The Mets are the only organization that Familia has known, signing with the club as a 17-year-old out of the Dominican Republic in July 2007. His tenure has included 123 saves, third most in franchise history.
Mets manager Mickey Callaway told reporters late Friday night that he was informed in the middle of the game not to use Familia because of a "potential trade." After the game, Familia -- a free agent at season's end -- was seen hugging teammates in the Mets' clubhouse and waiting on word from his agent.
Familia, 28, has a 2.88 ERA with 43 strikeouts across 40 2/3 innings this season. He's allowed one hit and one walk in seven scoreless innings this month.
