SEATTLE -- Right-hander Cody Anderson was back on the Columbus shuttle on Wednesday, with reliever Joba Chamberlain activated off the disabled list.
Chamberlain pitched the eighth inning of the Indians' 5-0 loss to the Mariners, allowing one run on one hit and a walk, with one strikeout.
Anderson was called up on Tuesday -- his fourth stint with the Indians this season -- to make a spot start in place of ailing Danny Salazar, who missed his turn due to right shoulder fatigue.
Anderson (1-4) was saddled with the loss Tuesday night, allowing six runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings, but he pitched better than his line indicated. He was on the verge of getting out of the fourth inning, but shortstop Francisco Lindor hesitated on a two-out infield chopper, allowing the Mariners' Adam Lind to reach and load the bases.
Seattle capitalized with consecutive two-run extra-base hits to chase Anderson and open a 6-0 lead en route to a 7-1 victory that snapped Cleveland's six-game winning streak.
Chamberlain went on the DL May 22 with an intercostal strain. Prior to the injury, the right-hander recorded a 1.93 ERA in 14 relief appearances, striking out 15 while walking one.
"Joba's back on tonight," manager Terry Francona said before Wednesday's matchup with the Mariners. "He threw a side on Monday, so he's ready to go. Cody goes back to Triple-A, so we're at 25 and we have a fresh bullpen arm.
"We tried to maneuver last night where nobody pitched too much, so we have everybody available."
Ramirez sits with bruised ankle
Michael Martinez was inserted into Wednesday's lineup at second base, batting ninth, in place of Jose Ramirez, who has a bruised left ankle.
Ramirez fouled a pitch off the ankle in the second inning on Tuesday night but remained in the game.
Gomes gets a break
Catcher Yan Gomes, who left Tuesday night's game in the second inning after being hit in the groin with a foul tip, was not in Wednesday's starting lineup.
"He's fine. He got checked and he had an ultrasound and everything, so he just feels like he got hit by a baseball," Francona said. "We're not going to start him tonight. I want to see how he moves around. I don't know if we'll put him in tonight or not, we'll see how he feels. He's pretty sore. Hopefully by tomorrow."
