TORONTO -- Blue Jays right-hander Joe Biagini still finds it hard to believe he's on a Major League roster, and the focus now is to make sure he stays there.
The affable 25-year-old was the beneficiary of Toronto's roster move Wednesday, when the team recalled Pat Venditte from Triple-A Buffalo and designated Arnold Leon for assignment.
Biagini is a Rule 5 Draft pick from the Giants and competed all spring to earn one of the final spots in the team's bullpen. He won a job with a strong showing in camp, but the Blue Jays knew all along they would eventually have to choose between Biagini and Leon. There wasn't room for both long-term, but the departure of Leon means Biagini's job is safe, at least for now.
"It's kind of been surreal, but not surreal," Biagini said about his first two weeks in the big leagues. "It's crazy that this is happening, but it's something I've wanted to [have] happen for a long time."
Biagini's spot is safe for the foreseeable future, but with relievers Franklin Morales and Aaron Loup on the 15-day disabled list, more roster moves will eventually be on the way. Biagini is hoping to use this opportunity to build off of his early-season success and stick around for the long haul.
"Part of this whole experience is to compartmentalize things and controlling things you can control," he says. "I'm trying to soak it all in, while at the same time trying not to focus on the big picture, because you can get caught up in focusing on things you shouldn't be focusing on."
If Biagini doesn't stick on the Blue Jays' 25-man roster for the duration of the season, he has to be offered back to the Giants for $25,000 -- half of the original fee to select a player in the Rule 5 Draft. Regardless of what happens, Biagini is content on focusing solely on his next outing, and helping the team win every night for the foreseeable future.
"My goal is to stay here as long as I can, but you can't necessarily control that, even," he said. "All you can do is be grateful for the moments that you have, and be thankful to be part of such a great ballclub."
