KANSAS CITY -- Astros right-hander Joe Musgrove will likely be activated from the 10-day disabled list and rejoin the rotation on Monday against the Rangers after throwing a bullpen session on Thursday afternoon without any pain.
Musgrove, who went on the DL on May 27 with shoulder discomfort, said he threw about 20-25 pitches in the bullpen, including fastballs, changeups and breaking balls.
"First off, the way my body felt was really good," he said. "No aches, no pains, nothing. No discomfort. I felt like I was able to move freely, and then on top of that, I had really good command of my stuff. I felt sharp, I felt like I kind of picked up right where I left off. That's a good sign for me."
Right-hander David Paulino took Musgrove's spot in the rotation when he went down, but Paulino will pitch on Sunday, with Musgrove likely to replace Dallas Keuchel, who went on the DL on Thursday with neck discomfort.
The Astros won't make a decision on Musgrove until they determine how he rebounds on Friday from his bullpen session.
"It will be important to see how I react after getting off the mound for the first time in about two weeks," Musgrove said. "I feel really good and I've been really staying on top of the arm care and all the stuff I need to do in the training room to make sure I'm feeling the best I can. Like I said, it's just a waiting game until tomorrow to see how I feel. I feel really good."
Musgrove (4-4, 4.89 ERA) threw a season-high 102 pitches in seven scoreless innings against the Orioles on May 26 in his best start of the season, but he started feeling shoulder discomfort a few days later and eventually had a cortisone shot.
