Three games into his White Sox tenure, catcher Joey Bart was placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a fifth metacarpal fracture in his left hand. Left-handed pitcher Chris Murphy went on the 15-day IL with a left flexor strain.
To take their places on the roster, catcher Edgar Quero and right-hander David Sandlin were recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.
In the midst of a back-and-forth affair at Fenway Park on Thursday night, Bart was removed from the game after being hit by a 97.7 mph fastball on his left hand in the seventh inning of the White Sox 12-11 loss in 13 innings. Bart had also been hit on the foot in the top of the second inning.
“It’s a fracture,” said manager Will Venable on Thursday. “Obviously, it will be an IL, and we’ll figure out what we’re going to do and what the timeline is with him as we continue to evaluate.”
The White Sox catcher, acquired from Pittsburgh at the Trade Deadline on Monday, was making just his second start since being acquired. Bart figured to get plenty of reps behind the plate with Kyle Teel on the injured list with a left ankle sprain.
Including his pinch-hit appearance on Wednesday, Bart is 0-for-6 since joining the White Sox, with a walk and four strikeouts. On the year, he’s batting .214 with four home runs and 13 RBIs.
Drew Romo came on to run for Bart and remained in the game behind the dish at catcher.
