Means, Mancini 'ready to go'; Stewart update

April 2nd, 2022

LAKELAND, Fla. -- John Means and the Orioles beat the rain Saturday, but not by much.

In his final spring tuneup, Means threw 71 pitches in a rain-shortened 2-0 Spring Training win over the Tigers.

"It kind of worked out perfectly, and [Paul] Fry got an 'up' so I helped him get in the game," said Means, who pitched 4 2/3 innings. "I worked all the pitches in and was throwing them for strikes. I think I'm ready to go."

Means, named Baltimore's Opening Day starter on Thursday, was lifted with a couple of runners on base in the fifth inning. Fry got the final out on a fly ball, and the long-anticipated rain came the following inning, finishing the game.

"The biggest thing was to get Means through five innings or to get up to his pitch count," said manager Brandon Hyde. "In this kind of situation, I think we got the best-case scenario of getting our starting pitcher stretched out. That was the most important thing, and we did that."

It was only the third spring appearance for Means, who will pitch against the Rays in Friday's opener at St. Petersburg.

He pitched only 10 innings this spring, giving up five runs on 14 hits and striking out six.

"I'd probably be built up a little more [in a full-length spring]," he said. "We'll see how many innings I go on Opening Day, but I feel ready physically."

Means threw 97 pitches in a 1-0 Opening Day win at Boston last season.

Mancini ready to go
Trey Mancini decided to play in front of family and friends Saturday, taking his longest trip of the spring up to Lakeland.

"It was either here or tomorrow [to Fort Myers], so I decided to come here," said Mancini, who grew up 15 miles away in Winter Haven.

Mancini, who has been in Sarasota since before the lockout ended, said the abbreviated Spring Training session has been long enough for him.

"Probably within the last few days, I definitely got there," he said. "Mentally, just knowing the season's coming up, you kind of lock in a little more. But I feel ready to go."

He has played in 10 games and has had 26 at-bats.

"The whole league is in the same situation, same amount of games," said Mancini. "So it is what it is. If you feel you don't have enough at-bats, you can go in the back field and face guys throwing live, too. So even though the box score might say you have this many at-bats in Spring Training games, you face guys and do things that aren't known or reported, so you just do what you have to do to get ready."

Stewart getting close
DJ Stewart has not been ruled out for a spot on the Opening Day roster, Hyde said, although the outfielder has not played since getting hit on the hand by a pitch on March 23.

Stewart took some swings in Sarasota on Saturday.

"Hopefully in the next day or two, he'll get in a little game action," Hyde said. "It's getting close, but we're playing it by ear right now."

Game details

• Kelvin Gutierrez homered off Detroit starter Eduardo Rodriguez for Baltimore's first run.

• Shortstop Ramón Urías drove in the Orioles' other run with a two-out single just before the rain came in the top of the sixth. Urías also threw out Victor Reyes at the plate in the fifth inning.

• Robbie Grossman, Miguel Cabrera and Dustin Garneau hit balls off Means that were caught on the warning track.

• Mike Baumann, Dillon Tate and Felix Bautista were rained out of their innings Saturday. Hyde said he would "probably push them back, see how tomorrow looks."
