D-backs option top pitching prospect Duplantier

Right-hander sent to Triple-A Reno to return to starting

PHOENIX -- The D-backs optioned right-hander Jon Duplantier to Triple-A Reno following Tuesday night’s 5-4 win over the Rangers, and a corresponding roster move will be made Wednesday.

Duplantier is the D-backs' No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline and was called up April 1 to provide a fresh arm in Arizona's bullpen. The 24-year-old worked three innings in relief vs. the Padres that night to earn a save, but with the team’s starters pitching better, it was almost a week before he got into another game.

In two appearances, Duplantier struck out three over four scoreless innings.

The D-backs view Duplantier as a starter, and therefore they felt it was in the best interests for his development that he goes to Reno, where he can start every fifth day.

The D-backs will likely call up a position player to fill the roster spot, giving them their preferred mix of 13 position players and 12 pitchers.
