Rangers recall No. 12 prospect Hernandez

August 20th, 2019

ARLINGTON -- In need of a fresh arm in their bullpen, the Rangers added reinforcement for Game 2 of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Angels by calling up right-hander from Double-A Frisco.

Hernandez and left-handed starter Brock Burke were both added before the second game. Right-handers Phillips Valdez and Ian Gibaut were optioned to Triple-A Nashville after both pitched in the Rangers' 5-1 loss to the Angels in Game 1.

Hernandez, who is the No. 12 prospect in the Rangers' farm system, per MLB Pipeline, will be looking to make his Major League debut. He was 5-9 with a 5.16 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP in 16 starts and six relief appearances for Frisco. Five of Hernandez's last six outings have come in relief.

Gibaut was outstanding in his short stay with the Rangers, and was only sent down because he pitched five innings in three appearances over four days. He will likely be back in September after not allowing a run on five hits, no walks and seven strikeouts.

Valdez was recalled on Monday and pitched one frame against the Angels in the series opener, and 3 1/3 innings on Tuesday after Joe Palumbo left the game in the second inning with a blister on his left thumb. He is not going to be available for a couple of days, so the Rangers put him on the heavily used Nashville shuttle.
