ARLINGTON -- The Tigers' injury woes continued on Friday with shortstop José Iglesias, who became the third member of the everyday lineup in the last seven days to land on the 15-day disabled list.
Iglesias was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring, an injury sustained on Wednesday at Seattle. He joins Nick Castellanos and Cameron Maybin on the DL, as well as starting pitchers Jordan Zimmermann and Mike Pelfrey.
Iglesias was hurt running hard down the line on a ground ball during a pinch-hit appearance against the Mariners. He finished out that game at shortstop but felt the hamstring tighten once the game ended.
The hope was that Thursday's off-day would give him a chance to loosen up to the point where he could start Friday's series opener against the Rangers -- an 8-5 loss -- but the improvement wasn't there, leading to a scratch.
"I came today to try to run, and it grabbed me," Iglesias said on Friday afternoon. "It feels sore."
Though Iglesias has a history of injuries, he had been healthy pretty much all season. He entered Friday having played in 106 of Detroit's 114 games. Though his .249 batting average and .625 OPS would mark career lows if the season ended today, he hit 17-for-59 out of the second spot in the batting order, helping the Tigers cope with injuries to Maybin for a stretch. Defensively, his 10.2 Ultimate Zone Rating is easily his career best and ranked fourth highest among Major League shortstops entering Friday.
Andrew Romine replaced Iglesias on Friday, batting ninth. How the Tigers fill Iglesias' role long-term will be another issue. For Friday the Tigers recalled right-handed reliever Warwick Saupold, who was with the Tigers on Wednesday while Bruce Rondón was on paternity leave. The Tigers optioned Saupold back to Toledo after that game, but he accompanied the team to Texas and pitched three innings on Friday.

Detroit will be back to 12 position players on Saturday, when shortstop prospect Dixon Machado reports from Triple-A Toledo. The 24-year-old filled in for an injured Iglesias last September and will share starts over the next couple of weeks with Romine. Mike Aviles, another utility infielder, is also likely to get an occasional start.
"We know Mach. He's going to be very solid defensively," manager Brad Ausmus said. "He's gonna mix in his hits here and there. He'll be fine. He's been here before."
As for the roster as a whole, the question lingers as to how many more personnel losses the Tigers can take. They opened the season with Maybin on the DL before losing Zimmermann and J.D. Martinez for midseason stretches, but haven't had this many key players lost to injury in a few years.
"Trust me, they believe," Ausmus said. "We have to get through the injuries. We have to stay afloat. We have to win some ballgames. We can't go out there and not win; that's the important thing. If we can get healthy toward the end of August, and we can stay right where we are -- or even a little better -- in the meantime, then I think we'll be fine."
