Collmenter may begin season on 15-day DL

D-backs determine hot-hitting Segura will bat leadoff

March 30th, 2016

MESA, Ariz. -- D-backs right-hander Josh Collmenter reported tightness in his right shoulder after his appearance Sunday, and it is possible he could open the year on the 15-day disabled list.
"He didn't feel like he could get the extension he needed," Arizona manager Chip Hale said of Collmenter. "We shut him down for a couple of days. I think he's back throwing now. Is he going to start the season on the DL here? That's a decision we have to make here with him."
Hale said tests done on Collmenter's shoulder did not show damage, but rather just inflammation.
If Collmenter starts the year on the active roster, there is just one bullpen spot left with Enrique Burgos, Silvino Bracho, Evan Marshall and Jake Barrett in the mix. An injury to Collmenter would allow the team to carry two of those four.
Hitting leadoff
Infielder Jean Segura came into Wednesday's game batting .527, and he will be the team's leadoff hitter to start the season.
"I think with what we would like, Jean has proven that he could be a leadoff hitter for us," Hale said.

Hale said Segura would be in the lineup "pretty much every day," but the team has not decided whether that will be at shortstop, second base, or some combination of the two.
Decisions looming
Finalizing the 25-man roster will likely come down to the wire. Though the team believes outfielder A.J. Pollock will open the year on the active roster, they don't know for sure and that would impact the final roster composition.
Hale was asked if there was anything more that infielder Brandon Drury needed to show him to make the roster, and though he didn't specifically answer the question, the manager did give some insight into the thought process.

"I think he's proven beyond a shadow of a doubt for me that he's a big league player," Hale said. "I'm starting to see where our roster is going to end up being. I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. There's just going to be some guys that are left out that are big league guys.
"Is it going to be him? I can't say that right now. He sure is deserving to be on this 25-man roster, but it just depends on what direction we go with the roster."
