Hamilton's surgery reveals additional damage

June 9th, 2016
Josh Hamilton is signed with the team through 2017.

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers announced back on May 23 that outfielder Josh Hamilton was going to undergo a third surgery on his left knee to repair lateral and meniscus cartilage, and thus would miss the rest of the season. But when Hamilton underwent surgery on the knee in Houston on Wednesday, Dr. Walter Lowe discovered that the ligament had also been damaged, necessitating a full reconstruction.
Hamilton will begin rehabbing in Houston in the next few days. The team did not have an update on his timetable for return.
After the May announcement, general manager Jon Daniels said that Hamilton was "100 percent" committed to playing next season and that the Rangers would revisit his status with the team in the offseason.
Hamilton, 35, did not appear in a game this season and is signed with the team through 2017.
Chirinos will be back Thursday: Catcher Robinson Chirinos, who's been on the 60-day disabled list since April 10 with a fractured right forearm, will catch nine innings for Double-A Frisco on Wednesday and is expected to rejoin the team on Thursday.
However, the Rangers would not say whether he would be activated from the DL.
"He's had no setbacks," manager Jeff Banister said. "We'll let him get through tonight and see where he is."
Chirinos went 1-for-4 and caught the entire game for Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday. Entering Wednesday, Rangers catchers were leading the American League with an .802 OPS and .325 on-base percentage.
Worth noting
• Shin-Soo Choo was assigned to Frisco and will play seven innings in the outfield on Wednesday night. He's expected to either serve as a designated hitter or get the day off on Thursday, then play back-to-back days in the outfield Friday and Saturday. Choo has been on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring since May 23 -- retroactive to May 21 -- and was eligible to return this past Sunday.
• Outfielder Drew Stubbs said that he is still a week or so away from beginning a rehab assignment. He's been on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left toe since May 23.
