Josh James (sore shoulder) goes on injured list

July 23rd, 2019

HOUSTON -- The Astros on Tuesday placed right-hander on the 10-day injured list after he experienced shoulder soreness and recalled right-hander from Triple-A Round Rock.

Astros manager AJ Hinch removed James from Sunday’s 5-3 win over the Rangers after his fastball velocity dipped on his last two pitches.

James said Monday that he was experiencing “general soreness” from an increased workload since the All-Star break. The Astros decided to play it safe by activating Sneed and not leaving themselves short-handed in the bullpen while James took some time off.

“After I posted the lineup [Tuesday] … Josh reported continued soreness in his shoulder, so we’re going to take any of the debate out of it and put him on the injured list for the time being and get Cy here,” Hinch said. “We’re lucky we have Round Rock only a couple of hours away, so Cy will get here sometime during the game [against the A's].”

Sneed made his big league debut earlier this year and posted a 4.09 ERA in two long relief outings June 27 and July 11, allowing five runs and 13 hits in 11 innings while striking out 11. He has spent most of the year at Round Rock, going 6-6 with a 4.07 ERA in 15 games (nine starts).

“He can provide some length and also be a reliever when needed,” Hinch said. “It’s nice to get him back up. He definitely didn’t deserve to go down when he went down, and then he went down and pitched well. To get him back is a good advantage to have for him.”

James has posted a 4.73 ERA in 39 games this year, including one start as an opener. He has struck out 80 in 51 1/3 innings and is approaching the franchise record for strikeouts by a rookie reliever (Brad Lidge, 97, in 2003).

Astros announce Harmon as Open honoree
Legendary golf instructor Butch Harmon will be the honoree at this year’s Houston Open golf tournament, which is now being run by the Astros Golf Foundation. Harmon has been ranked as the No. 1 golf instructor by Golf Digest every year for the past 16 years.

“To put his name on the tournament gives us another reason to have a successful tournament and bring us one of the best tournaments on the tour, which is our goal,” Astros owner Jim Crane said.

Harmon retired from teaching on the PGA Tour in 2019. He continues to teach from his teaching center in Las Vegas, and he oversees the Butch Harmon Learning Center at The Floridian, Crane’s golf club in Palm City, Fla.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to help this city and help this tournament,” Harmon said. “Houston means a lot to me, it is a great golf community and always has been. Having the Astros get involved is the greatest thing that could happen to this tournament. What Jim Crane has done with baseball in this city is incredible, and I am excited to work with him, Giles [Kibbe, Astros Golf Foundation president] and the Astros to do the same for the Houston golf community and make the Houston Open the greatest tournament on the Tour.”

The Houston Open will be played Oct. 10-13 at the Golf Club in Houston. Tickets for the tournament and the multiple hospitality areas are available now at houstonopengolf.com.
