TEMPE, Ariz. -- First baseman Justin Bour and outfielder Michael Hermosillo are both dealing with minor injuries and are being held out of Cactus League action early this spring, Angels manager Brad Ausmus said Sunday.

Bour came into Spring Training with a hamstring injury and will be eased into games, while Hermosillo is dealing with some scar tissue in his adductor muscle after undergoing offseason surgery to repair a sports hernia. Both players should get into games soon and are expected to be ready for the start of the season.

"[Bour] had a hamstring, very mild, prior to the start of camp, so we’re taking it easy with him. He’s taking ground balls and hitting, but in terms of games it will be a little longer," Ausmus said. "[Hermosillo] aggravated it. We think it’s just some scar tissue."

Hermosillo, who is competing for the fourth-outfielder spot with non-roster invitee Peter Bourjos, met with the medical staff about the injury and said it’s a normal occurrence after the operation.

"It's not like a reinjury or anything like that," Hermosillo said. "The doctor after the surgery told me that I'd have little issues here and again with the scar tissue breaking up in the area of the surgery. But it's all good. I've been working to make sure everything is good."

Hermosillo has been able to hit and throw and has been running on a treadmill. The issue is more when he turns his hips, so he’s avoided anything that could aggravate the injury.

“They just kind want it to chill it for a bit so it's not something that is nagging,” Hermosillo said.

Hermosillo, 24, got his first taste of the Majors last year, hitting .211/.274/.333 with a homer and four doubles in 31 games. Hermosillo, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the club's No. 16 prospect, can play all three outfield spots, but the Angels will have to decide whether it makes more sense for him to be a backup on the big league roster or for him to get everyday at-bats at Triple-A Salt Lake.

Cowart to arrive Monday

Two-way player Kaleb Cowart, who was claimed by the Angels on waivers on Saturday, will officially rejoin his former organization on Monday. The Angels plan to keep him as a two-way player this spring, but his main focus will be on pitching.

Cowart, the club’s first-round pick in the 2010 Draft, played in each of the last four seasons with the Angels, hitting .177/.241/.293 with six homers, 18 doubles and 33 RBIs in 162 games.

He's seen action at all four infield positions and left field but was a pitcher in high school and the Angels are the third club to claim him with the intent of trying him as a two-way player. The Mariners and Tigers both had plans to try out Cowart as a pitcher and a hitter, but he was designated for assignment twice this offseason. Cowart is out of Minor League options so he can't be sent to Triple-A without clearing waivers first.

Ohtani hits off tee for third straight day

Shohei Ohtani continued his rehab on Sunday, hitting 25 balls off a tee and taking 15 dry swings. Ohtani, who underwent Tommy John surgery on Oct. 1, said on Saturday that he’s hopeful to move up to soft toss in roughly a week. He remains on track for a return in May as a designated hitter but won’t hit this year.

Harvey healthy after glute strain

Right-hander Matt Harvey, who was sidelined for three days early in camp with a glute strain, has thrown two bullpen sessions without any issues since the injury, including his latest one on Saturday. He said he expects to throw one or two live bullpen sessions before he gets into a game.

Right-hander Jaime Barria, the favorite to win the fifth-starter spot, will make his spring debut on Monday against the Brewers at 12:10 p.m. PT at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Barria, 22, is coming off a solid rookie year that saw him go 10-9 with a 3.41 ERA and 98 strikeouts, 47 walks and 17 homers allowed in 129 1/3 innings. Barria is competing for the final spot in the rotation with Felix Pena and Dillon Peters, while prospects Griffin Canning and Jose Suarez are in the mix.
