Softball player pulls off all-time deke to avoid tag at home

March 6th, 2022

Alexandria Whitmore worked herself out of quite a pickle against Drake on Saturday.

The Kent State junior took her lead off third base and then darted for home on a wild pitch that went to the backstop on the fly. But as the ball caromed quickly back to catcher Skylar Rigby, Whitmore found herself running straight into an out.

Even the play-by-play announcer said, “Easy play,” as he saw Whitmore’s developing predicament.

No, sir. Whitmore took a few small steps back toward third and then threw herself flat on the ground about 10 feet from the plate to completely evade the tag of the charging Rigby. Whitmore tried to scramble to her feet, but instead crawled a few paces and then unleashed a full-out dive to score Kent State’s 11th and final run in an 11-0 victory.

Whitmore definitely earned that emphatic “safe” call celebration.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen anything like that, if ever,” the announcer said.
