Marte (groin) feels better, expects quick recovery

June 23rd, 2019

These are all of the finalists for the Starters Election, which begins Wednesday at noon ET and runs through Thursday at 4 p.m. The winners will be unveiled on ESPN that night starting at 7 ET. Players who do not get elected starters are not automatically added to the team as reserves -- they will be determined through a combination of “Player Ballot” choices and selections made by the Commissioner’s Office. All-Star pitchers and reserves will be announced on Sunday, June 30, at 5:30 p.m., also on ESPN.

PHOENIX -- One day after having to be removed in the third inning with a cramp in his left groin, D-backs second baseman was out of Saturday night’s starting lineup but he was confident about being able to play in Sunday afternoon’s series finale against the Giants.

“I’m going to be good tomorrow,” Marte said. “I’m not going to do anything today, just get my treatment. It feels a lot better, like 95 percent.”

After tripling in the first inning, Marte hit a single to center in the third and about a quarter of the way to first, he pulled up and began hobbling on his left leg.

“For sure I was scared,” Marte said. “I was just thinking at that moment I’m not going to be in the All-Star Game.”

Marte has long dreamed of being selected to play in the All-Star Game and he’s got a real chance this year as he is a finalist for the All-Star Game Starters Election.

Even if he doesn’t win that vote against the Braves' Ozzie Albies and the Brewers' Mike Moustakas, Marte's numbers indicate he should be on the team.

Marte has a slash line of .309/.359/.586.

“I don’t see how there’s much of a doubt, in my opinion,” D-backs general manager Mike Hazen said. “He’s one of the best players in the entire game, let alone in the National League. He’s continued to improve in every way, shape and form.”

Lively adds starting depth

The D-backs on Saturday acquired right-hander from the Royals for cash considerations and assigned him to Triple-A Reno.

Lively, 27, was recently designated for assignment by the Royals. He appeared in one game for them this year, and over parts of three seasons in the Majors with the Phillies and Royals, he was 4-10 with a 4.80 ERA in 26 games (20 starts).

Lively will give the D-backs some much-needed pitching depth after injuries to Jon Duplantier and Luke Weaver. The struggles of Taylor Clarke and Zack Godley have also tested the club's depth.

The D-backs will attempt to work with Lively’s pitch mix, much like they did with Weaver when he came over from the Cardinals, to see if that can help unlock more of his potential.

“He became available and we felt from a depth perspective he was a guy that we had certain interest in,” Hazen said. “We want to keep stretching him out. He hasn’t been stretched out all the way. Last outing, he was out to like 50 pitches. We want to stretch him out even further to become true starter depth for us. We like his mix of pitches. We’re going to do some work with that. We’ve always liked him. We just felt like it was worth the opportunity to grab him when we could.”

Leyba called up

With Marte expected to be unavailable Saturday, the D-backs called up infielder Domingo Leyba from Triple-A Reno, where he was hitting .289/.343/.515.

This is the first promotion to the big leagues for Leyba, 23, who will likely be sent down when third baseman Jake Lamb is ready to return from his rehab assignment.

Leyba took the place of Kevin Cron, who was optioned to Reno following Friday night’s game.
