Kim Ng made history in November by becoming the first woman general manager in MLB history. But decades earlier, she was just like any of the girls and women around the world who turned to sports growing up.

In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), the Marlins' Twitter account posted a photo of Ng stretching out for a throw while keeping a foot on the bag during her time playing softball. The other image revealed statistics from her junior year at the University of Chicago in 1989. A right-handed hitter, Ng posted a .388 average with eight runs scored, two doubles, one homer, six RBIs and four walks to only one strikeout.

Ng broke into baseball as an intern with the White Sox the following year as part of a decades-long ascent to her current role in Miami’s front office.

Wednesday marked the 35th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day. According to the Women's Sports Foundation's website, the celebration is meant to inspire girls and women to play and be active, realize their full power and promote equality in sport. The Marlins also tweeted out a 10-second clip featuring a collage of the women who are part of their organization.
