MILWAUKEE -- The Cubs' Kristopher Bryant is getting a mini All-Star break.
Bryant, who is 0-for-15 over his past four games and has not hit a home run since May 14, did not start in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Brewers. The Cubs have an off-day on Thursday.
"I wanted to give him a day off and then he gets two," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of Bryant, who was batting .281 overall. "It's also a day game after a night game. I like to take advantage of a day off by giving a guy a day off in front of a day off so he gets his little mini All-Star break and they feel better after that."
Bryant's homerless streak of 24 games is a career high.
"He's just been off with his swing a little bit, and he looks fatigued a little bit and I just want to get him off his feet," Maddon said.
Darvish, Edwards Jr. on the mend
Both Yu Darvish and C.J. Edwards passed their respective tests on Wednesday, and the Cubs are planning the next step in their rehab. Darvish, on the disabled list retroactive to May 23 with tendinitis in his right triceps, threw his first bullpen session on Tuesday and was expected to do so again on Friday. Edwards has been sidelined since May 30 because of inflammation in his right shoulder.
"The next step is to map out the next moment," Maddon said.
Edwards was not expected to need as long to return because he's a reliever.
"Bullpen guys can overcome those moments more quickly than a starter can," Maddon said. "I don't have a finish line except that [Edwards] is feeling good and walking around and you see him smiling all the time. That normally tells you a guy is feeling better."
Rundown recap
So after reviewing Tuesday night's bizarre rundown play by the Brewers in the third inning, did Maddon have any insight on Wednesday?
"What should've happened was we should've been able to conduct the rundown between second and third, and after that, all bets are off," Maddon said.
Christian Yelich was on second when Lorenzo Cain hit a grounder to second baseman Javier Baez, and the rundown began. But both Yelich and Cain avoided being tagged because of heads-up baserunning by Cain, who scampered back to first. The Cubs didn't have anyone covering.
"Everybody rotates," Maddon said of what should happen on defense. "If the catcher goes to third, the first baseman does need to come to the plate. There's a lot going on. You could break that down.
"That play right there is an anomaly play. We should've gotten it done between second and third. If we had done that, that becomes moot. That's really the breakdown there, and not necessarily anywhere else."

Draft signings
The Cubs signed University of San Diego right-handed pitcher Paul Richan, who was selected 78th overall in the MLB Draft. Richard reportedly signed for $450,000.

Fourth-round pick Ethan Roberts, a right-handed pitcher who played for Tennessee Technological University, also has reportedly signed, but he needs to undergo a physical.
"It's going to be fun," Roberts said on Wednesday. "I'm ready. I'm just ready to help them win, try to work my way up the ladder and hopefully, in the end, I'll be closing a World Series."
