SEATTLE -- Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager was sidelined for a second straight game by illness on Wednesday and manager Scott Servais isn't sure he'll be ready by Friday when Seattle opens a 12-game road trip at Tampa Bay.
Servais said after Wednesday's 7-6 win that Seager was going to fly with the club on Wednesday night, but he had lost about 10 pounds and was going to need some time to get back on his feet.
Seager was sent home Tuesday with a stomach virus, and he was still not well enough to play in Wednesday's series finale against the Orioles.
"He's still not feeling great," Servais said prior to Wednesday's game. "We have to give him some time and get him on an IV and get some fluids and antibiotics in him. It's some kind of infection. He won't be in there today, but hopefully he can travel with us and then we have the day off tomorrow."
Danny Valencia got the start in Seager's place at third base on Wednesday, with Yonder Alonso playing first base.
"Danny came up as a third baseman and has played there a lot," Servais said. "Obviously, what Kyle does over there is pretty darn good. I'm not expecting that, but we'll keep [Valencia's] bat in the lineup and he continues to give us pretty good at-bats."
Paxton, Hernandez to see doctor
Injured starters James Paxton and Felix Hernandez will both remain in Seattle as the Mariners head on their two-week East Coast road swing, and each is scheduled to see team physician Dr. Ed Khalfayan on Friday to be re-checked.
Paxton has been sidelined for one week with a strained left pectoral muscle, and he said things are progressing well. He hopes to be cleared to start playing catch this weekend if Friday's exam goes as planned.

"It's getting a lot better," Paxton said. "I'm real close to getting on the throwing program and getting back out there again."
Servais said he's still hopeful Paxton can be back within three weeks of his injury, which would mean an early September return. Hernandez has been out since Aug. 2 with bursitis in his shoulder, and he appears a little behind Paxton in his recovery.
Hisashi Iwakuma, sidelined since May 3 with a sore shoulder, played catch again Wednesday and has thrown four recent bullpen sessions, but he continues to have intermittent issues and there is no timetable for his return.
Worth noting
• Reliever David Phelps, on the DL since Aug. 7 with a right elbow impingement, will throw a bullpen Friday in St. Petersburg. If all goes well, he'll follow that with a simulated game situation and then potentially be activated midway through the road trip.
• Right-hander Christian Bergman cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday, one day after being designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot. The 29-year-old has gone 4-4 with a 4.91 ERA in 11 games (eight starts) this year for Seattle.

• Servais said Andrew Albers will remain in the rotation after his solid outing in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Orioles. Albers, acquired last week from the Braves, is lined up to face Atlanta in Monday's series opener following the weekend series in St. Petersburg.
• Former Mariners pitcher Christopher Young was visiting the club on Wednesday, meeting with general manager Jerry Dipoto and assistant GM Jeff Kingston to get a peek at how front-office operations work. Young was released by the Royals this spring and he said he's looking at options for his post-playing days, though he's still hoping to pitch again next year after recovering from a double-hernia operation.
