La Gran Fantasía 2023: Peña, Yonder building their Latino powerhouses

September 15th, 2023

Ronald Acuña Jr. or Juan Soto? Fernando Tatis Jr. or Julio Rodríguez? Luis Arraez or Jose Altuve? Aroldis Chapman or Félix Bautista? Luis Castillo or Framber Valdez? Elly De La Cruz or Francisco Lindor?

Who would be your pick to build a team? Who would you choose for each position?

These are the questions, and debates, that evoke passions on social media or the streets of Santo Domingo, Caracas or San Juan. And while a few decades ago these “battles” wouldn’t have as many candidates, the Latin talent in MLB today is abundant.

With the arrival of Hispanic Heritage Month, that was exactly the task that former Major Leaguers and current MLB Network analysts Carlos Peña and Yonder Alonso decided to tackle in La Gran Fantasía 2023. Using a draft-style format, each picked his best roster for a fantasy team of active Latin players.

Throughout the month, from MLB Network’s Studio 21, Peña and Alonso will each make their selections for catcher, first base, second base and third base, shortstop, three outfielders, three starting pitchers, three relievers and a designated hitter. Once a player is chosen, he’s off the board.

You can follow La Gran Fantasía throughout the month during MLB Network segments and also on MLB.com, LasMayores.com, MLB.TV and MLB social media channels. The entire series will be found here after all of the episodes have been aired.

Peña and Alonso, two veterans with a combined 25 years’ experience in the Majors combined, will discuss their selections and also will talk with some of the players they’ve chosen about their roots, the culture in their respective countries and their paths that has made them the stars they are now, among other topics.

With the 2023 season having 235 Latin-born players as part of Major League rosters for Opening Day, and more than 20 Latin players selected for the 2023 All-Star Game in Seattle, Peña and Alonso will certainly have a tough time deciding on which pieces to build their powerhouses.
