Lacy, Hecht throw no-hitter for South Bend
Lacy, Hecht throw no-hitter for South Bend
June 7th, 2018
David Adler
Rollie Lacy and Ben Hecht helped the Class A South Bend Cubs make some history on Wednesday, with the two pitching prospects combining to throw a no-hitter in a 7-0 victory over the Fort Wayne Tin Caps. :: Complete prospect coverage :: • Cubs Top 30 | How Cubs prospects fared Wednesday Lacy, a 22-year-old right-hander drafted in the 11th round last year, led the way for the Cubs' Midwest League affiliate. He started Wednesday's game and no-hit Fort Wayne for seven innings, allowing only a pair of walks and collecting six strikeouts. After Lacy threw his 96th pitch to get through the seventh -- striking out the Tin Caps' Juan Fernandez -- Hecht came on to finish the job in relief. The 23-year-old right-hander, drafted by Chicago the round after Lacy, didn't allow a baserunner in the final two innings. Hecht sealed the no-hitter by punching out Tirso Ornelas, the Padres' No. 13 prospect, on a full count.
It was the first no-hitter thrown by South Bend since July 10, 2014, when Blayne Weller no-hit the Dayton Dragons. But back then, South Bend was the Silver Hawks and affiliated with the D-backs. For his part in the no-hitter, Lacy improved to 2-1 this season and lowered his ERA to 2.50 in 50 1/3 innings. Hecht now has a 3.60 ERA in his 20 innings in 2018.
