Longtime Cardinal Gagliano passes away at 74

December 22nd, 2016

Former big leaguer Phil Gagliano passed away of cardiac arrest at his home in Branson, Mo., on Tuesday, according to a report from the Associated Press. He was 74.
Gagliano played for four clubs over a 12-year career, spending a bulk of his playing days with the Cardinals, for whom he played in two World Series, in 1967 and '68.
A career .238 hitter who hit 14 homers with 159 RBIs over 702 games, Gagliano primarily played second and third base, but was used all over the field. Because he was with the talented Cardinals before free agency era, he was limited primarily to a bench role. He also played for the Cubs, Red Sox and Reds.
Gagliano, who suffered a heart attack five years ago, was reportedly in poor health after a heart procedure recently, his brother told The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, where he grew up and attended Christian Brothers High School with All-Star catcher Tim McCarver.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Canale Funeral Directors in Memphis, per the AP, and a visitation at St. Louis Catholic Church in the area on Monday, per The Commercial Appeal.
