TORONTO -- The Blue Jays added right-handed pitcher Lucas Harrell to their roster prior to Saturday afternoon's game against the Red Sox. Outfielder Ian Parmley was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Harrell's arrival followed an 11-inning game on Friday night in which Toronto used every reliever, so his addition provided insurance in the bullpen. He came in to start the seventh inning of the Blue Jays' 7-1 loss on Saturday and gave up two runs in 2 2/3 frames, striking out three.
"I thought he looked good, he really did. He has some experience," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "He has a good live fastball with a lot of sinking action on it. I thought he looked really good."
Since starting the season on the disabled list with biceps tendinitis, Harrell had made six starts between Class A Advanced Dunedin and Triple-A Buffalo. The 32-year-old posted a 2.28 ERA in those outings, recording 20 strikeouts and 10 walks over 27 2/3 innings.
Over parts of six seasons at the Major League level from 2010-16, Harrell made 71 starts and 26 relief appearances for the White Sox, Astros, Braves and Rangers.
Parmley made his Major League debut on June 23 after a promotion from Triple-A in his first season at that level. The 27-year-old, drafted by Toronto in 2012, went 0-for-3 with one strikeout in his short big league stint.
