Notes: Weaver to IL; Bumgarner update

Righty joins long list of injured D-backs; No. 7 prospect Martin called up

May 19th, 2021

D-backs starting pitcher was placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday after an MRI exam showed a strain in his right shoulder.

The right-hander is seeking more opinions, and the D-backs said there is not a clear timeline for how long he will be out. Weaver will be reassessed in a few weeks.

It's another blow to the starting rotation, which is already without the services of Zac Gallen and Taylor Widener, and it adds to a slew of injuries that has sidelined key contributors like Ketel Marte, Christian Walker, Carson Kelly and Kole Calhoun, just to name a few.

"Every night is something where we are holding our breath," assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye said. "I think not just here in Arizona, I mean every team is being faced with this. The injuries are mounting daily, so it's been challenging. As you see, we've used our whole roster, almost, and we've gotten contributions from a lot of people that probably we anticipated getting contributions from, but we didn't anticipate that happening in May."

D-backs No. 7 prospect Corbin Martin, who was the prized return in the package the Astros sent to the D-backs at the Trade Deadline in 2019 for Zack Greinke, was recalled from Triple-A Reno to start and make his D-backs debut in Tuesday's game against the Dodgers.

In two starts for Reno, Martin was 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA.

Bumgarner update
After leaving his start on Monday night with a left adductor spasm, Madison Bumgarner was feeling sore, but he should be OK to make his next scheduled start, D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said.

Bumgarner felt the spasm in his inner thigh while warming up for his start and pitched through the discomfort until coming out after taking his at-bat in the top of the fifth inning.
