Manny Machado was not in the starting lineup for the Padres' game against the Cubs on Tuesday night at Petco Park. Machado exited Monday's 9-7 win before the top of the seventh for precautionary reasons. Jake Cronenworth will step in for Machado at the hot corner in what will be Cronenworth's first career start at third base.
Padres manager Craig Stammen said after Monday's game that Machado had been lifted after it "looked like he was just going down the line a little slow, came out of the box a little awkwardly. He had a couple of slides at second that didn’t feel great on his lower half."
After a slow start to the season, Machado appeared to be hitting his stride at the plate over the past few games, having homered twice in the Mexico City Series finale on Sunday before going 3-for-4 on Monday with a pair of doubles.
