SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
Mike Zunino, C, returned from rehab assignment at AAA Tacoma and activated from the 10-day disabled list.
David Freitas, C, optioned to AAA Tacoma.
Zunino (#3) will be in uniform and available for today's (1:10 pm PT) game vs. the Chicago White Sox at Safeco Field.
Zunino, 27, was originally placed on the 10-day disabled list on July 5 with a left ankle bone bruise. He began a rehab assignment on Friday (7/20) with AAA Tacoma, where he went 1-for-5 (.200) with 1 RBI in 2 games. Prior to being placed on the DL, he was batting .189 (38x201) with 20 runs, 7 doubles, 12 home runs and 29 RBI in 60 games with the Mariners. His 3.65 catcher ERA is 3rd-best in the American League. Among catchers with at least 400.0 innings behind the plate, he ranks 3rd in the Majors with 6 defensive runs saved this season (Fangraphs). Zunino was named to the Mariners Opening Day roster, but did not appear in a game before being placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left oblique on March 30 (retroactive to March 27. He was activated from the DL on April 19 after appearing in 3 games on a rehab assignment with High-A Modesto (April 16-19).
The native of Cape Coral, Fla., has spent his entire seven-year professional career in the Mariners organization after being selected by the club with the 3rd overall pick in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Florida. Since making his debut in 2013, the Mariners are 61-20 (.753) when Zunino hits a home run, including 10-2 (.833) this season in games in which he homers. In parts of 5 Major League seasons with the Mariners, he has belted 87 career home runs, 2nd-most in club history by a primary catcher (Dan Wilson, 88).
Freitas, 29, was recalled from AAA Tacoma on July 5 for his third stint with the Mariners this season (also: March 30 - May 27 and May 30 - June 18). Since July 5, he went 2-for-18 (.111) with 1 run, 1 home run and 1 RBI in 6 games. He belted his first career home run in the big leagues on July 11 at Los Angeles-AL. Overall, the 6-foot-2, 240-pound catcher is batting .192 (15x78) with 8 runs, 4 doubles, 1 home run, 4 RBI and 8 walks in 29 games with the Mariners this season. In 12 games over two stints with AAA Tacoma this season, he is batting .395 (17x43) with 3 runs scored, 4 doubles, 5 RBI and 5 walks.
Freitas was claimed off waivers by Seattle from Atlanta on October 27, 2017. In parts of 2 Major League seasons with the Braves (2017) and Mariners (2018), he is batting .200 (19x95) with 10 runs, 6 doubles, 1 home run and 6 RBI in 35 games. He was originally selected by Washington in the 15th round of the 2010 MLB Draft out of the University of Hawaii - Manoa.
