ANAHEIM -- James Paxton threw a bullpen session prior to Thursday's series finale at Angel Stadium and experienced no issues with his bruised left arm, so the Mariners southpaw will head now to Triple-A Tacoma for a three-inning rehab stint on Saturday night against Las Vegas before rejoining the big league club later next week.
Paxton went on the 15-day disabled list after being hit in the left elbow by a line drive off the bat of Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons on Aug. 7.
"It felt really good," Paxton said after his throwing session. "I didn't experience any tightness at all, so that was a huge relief for me. No problem at all, so we're full go for Saturday. I'll throw three innings, sharpen up a little and be ready to rock 'n roll."
Paxton is 4-5 with a 3.53 ERA in 13 starts since being called up from Tacoma in early June. He's missed two starts while on the DL, but says he hopes to stay locked in to the form that had him posting a 1.65 ERA over his previous four outings.
"My arm slot felt normal, my stuff was spinning real good and coming out of my hand well," he said. "My sharpness was just okay, but I think when I get to the mound and start throwing with full intensity again, that stuff comes back. That's kind of what Saturday is going to be for."
Worth noting
• Although former closer Steve Cishek allowed three hits and two runs with two strikeouts in a one-inning outing for Short Seaon Everett in his second rehab outing on Wednesday, manager Scott Servais said the reports indicated he actually threw the ball fairly well and he expects the 30-year-old could rejoin the Mariners at some point in the upcoming homestand as he returns from a slight tear in his left hip labrum.
"He wanted to focus on throwing more fastballs and trying to get a feel for commanding that and when you do that at the low levels, they swing and you're going to give up some hits versus throwing your breaking ball and pretty much getting them out," Servais said. "But he felt fine coming out of it, so we'll see how he feels tomorrow and go from there."
• Right-handed pitcher Nathan Karns, who has been sidelined the past three weeks by a back issue, is starting to feel better, but has yet to begin throwing, according to Servais.
• Robinson Canó entered Thursday's game needing two more doubles to record his 12th straight season with 30 or more doubles. He's already the first player in MLB history to hit 30 doubles in his first 11 seasons and only three players -- Hall of Famers Stan Musial, Tris Speaker and Honus Wagner -- have had a streak of 12 or more straight seasons with 30 doubles at any point in their careers.
