SEATTLE -- Shortstop Jean Segura and reliever Steve Cishek, two key players on the 10-day disabled list for the Mariners, are making significant progress toward their returns.
Segura did some on-field running under the supervision of head athletic trainer Rick Griffin before Sunday's 8-7 win over the Rangers to test his strained right hamstring, while Cishek is en route to join the Double-A Arkansas club to begin a Minor League rehab assignment.
Though Segura wasn't running at full speed, the hope is he'll be ready to come off the DL when his 10 days are up on Friday, the second game of Seattle's upcoming road trip in Oakland.
"He's feeling pretty good," manager Scott Servais said. "He's been running inside on the treadmill. He hasn't let it all out on the field yet, but we've got time. We'll hopefully get him in there by the end of the week when his 10 days are up."
Segura has been sidelined since straining his right hamstring in Monday's home opener against the Astros. The 27-year-old put up a .313/.353/.406 line with one homer and three RBIs in his first eight games as Seattle's new leadoff hitter following his offseason acquisition from the D-backs.
Cishek's return is further down the road, but the right-hander was headed to San Antonio on Sunday to hook up with Seattle's new Double-A club, the Arkansas Travelers.
Cishek, 30, had microfracture hip surgery in October and got a late start to Spring Training. He has continued throwing at the team's complex in Peoria, Ariz., since the season began, and now is ready to get into game action.
Servais expects the former closer to need a handful of Minor League outings to show where he's at before he can rejoin the Mariners.
"We'll see how it goes," Servais said. "But he's excited to get out there, and then get over here and help us out."
Motter provides options
Utility man Taylor Motter has swung a hot bat since filling in for Segura, and he doesn't figure to disappear once the starting shortstop returns. Servais wants to give all his veterans time off, and Motter, who went 0-for-3 with a walk Sunday, can play any position.

Servais sat left fielder Jarrod Dyson on Sunday, with Guillermo Heredia getting the start, knowing the speedster takes a physical beating with his style of play. Heredia crushed a game-tying homer in the seventh inning Sunday and went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
"When he's on the bases and how he plays, there's a lot of wear and tear on the body," Servais said. "Diving headfirst, scrapes and bruises and bumps do take a toll. We'll give him days off as we go along here, as I will with a lot of the guys.
"Our core guys, I need to find days for them as well. Once we get Jean Segura back in the mix, it frees up things to give [Kyle Seager] a day, [Robinson Cano] a day, get [Nelson Cruz] in the outfield for a day. Even a guy like Mitch Haniger needs a day off once in a while. We have to monitor that as we go along."
