SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- After compiling the highest batting average and on-base percentage of his career last season with the Rockies, Mark Reynolds waited for guaranteed Major League offers that didn't come. But he wasn't disappointed enough to leave the continent.
Reynolds, 33, turned down a $3 million offer to play in Korea and re-signed with the Rockies on a Minor League contract. He stands to make $1.5 million if he makes the Major League club, and an additional $2.5 million is available via performance bonuses.

Ideally, he'll serve as insurance at the infield corners, and possibly the outfield corners. But if there is an injury to Ian Desmond, who signed for five years and $70 million as the new first baseman, Reynolds could grab his old job. After hitting .282 with a .356 OBP with 14 homers and 53 RBIs in a season twice interrupted by left hand injuries, Reynolds came back to familiar surroundings after not fielding Major League offers.

"I definitely didn't see that coming," he said. "I had a lot of offers similar to this one, and I felt like this was my best shot to come in and really make an impact on a team that's on its way up.
"I know the front office and the trainers and the players, and it's somewhere I wanted to be."
Reynolds said he didn't consider the Korea offer. Besides, he feels well-traveled even without being employed in another country.
"Maybe if I was 28 or 29, but not when I'm 33 with three young kids," he said. "In 2006, I went to Cuba. I've been all over. I played for Team USA. It's not like I'm missing out on world experiences. I've experienced a lot of cultures. I wanted to be with my family and not halfway around the world."
Reynolds entered the Majors in 2007 as a power-hitting third baseman, but will need a refresher at the position. Manager Bud Black asked him to dust off his third-base skills, and he could play there while Nolan Arenado is with Team USA for the World Baseball Classic.

• The Rockies will open Cactus League play Saturday against the D-backs at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. Colorado will start lefty Tyler Anderson, and follow him with righties Antonio Senzatela and Jordan Lyles. All will throw two innings or 30 pitches. The club hasn't announced the pitching schedule for the rest of the game. Black also said that lefty Chris Rusin will start one of Sunday's split-squad games against the White Sox.
