SAN FRANCISCO -- Shortstop Masyn Winn, who just returned to the Cardinals from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday afternoon, was scratched from the starting lineup prior to Wednesday’s series finale against the Giants with pain in his left thumb.
Winn was originally hitting eighth and playing shortstop in manager Oliver Marmol’s lineup, but after the scratch, Thomas Saggese got the start at short, with José Fermín manning second and hitting ninth.
Winn was activated from the injured list and went 0-for-4 on Tuesday, after being shelved since Aug. 25 (retroactive to Aug. 22) due to a left thumb fracture sustained on a slide on Aug. 21. He had taken swings on the field and participated in pregame drills on Monday, with the club giving him an extra day before Tuesday’s activation.
In Winn’s absence, St. Louis went 6-9 in 15 games, before also losing in his return on Tuesday, 2-1.
In 123 games this season, Winn is slashing .236 ./312/.323 with 19 doubles and 51 RBIs. But while his offense has been a bit of a downturn from his previous two seasons as a full-time player, Winn’s 2025 Gold Glove-winning defense has continued to shine: His 15 Outs Above Average entering play Wednesday ranks fourth best in the Majors among shortstops.
