MESA, Ariz. -- Mat Latos and Austin Jackson made their on-field White Sox debut during a B game against the Rangers in Surprise on Saturday morning.
Latos, the right-handed hurler who figures to slot into the fourth spot of the White Sox rotation, allowed three runs over four innings, including Rangers prospect Ryan Cordell's two-run homer to left on a fastball in the first. The veteran told a reporter after the outing in Surprise that results certainly didn't matter as much as the work at this point.
"Come April, I'll care about the results," Latos said. "Most importantly I was worried about hitting my spots and hitting each side of the plate with my fastball. The one big thing we had been working on in my side sessions was big today, able to keep the fastball to the side of the plate I wanted it to.
"Earlier in the game I threw a couple real nice two-seamers into some righties. Threw one that didn't move at all, made that mistake and it got hit for a home run. But I settled in after that, everything came out of my arm, easy flow, go through the motions and making my pitches.
"Everyone says I look good so I won't complain," Latos said. "I'll take it in stride, get back to work and get ready for the next outing."
That next outing for Latos takes place on Thursday's team off-day. Jackson, added via free agency by the White Sox this past Sunday, finished 1-for-3 against the Rangers' Colby Lewis but didn't play the field.
"It felt good just to see some live action," Jackson told a reporter. "Just good to get out there, get the legs moving and get some blood in them.
"It's important to really get better, especially getting out here later than usual. Good to get live action, get the timing down and get caught up to speed."
There's a chance Jackson could be part of Cactus League action on Sunday against the Diamondbacks at Camelback Ranch, playing center field.
"We're talking about it. There's the possibility," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "I'm going to talk to him in the morning, see how he feels.
"I know he felt pretty good about running around today. We'll see how he feels when he goes in the morning, but there's the possibility he starts playing some outfield the next couple days."
Worth noting
• White Sox reliever Jake Petricka left Saturday's 9-2 loss to the Cubs at Sloan Park after being hit in the right shoulder by a John Andreoli line drive in the fifth.
The right-handed reliever faced only Andreoli. Petricka was fine but taken out for precautionary measures and replaced by Daniel Webb.
"Yeah, he said he got hit," Ventura said. "That's enough for me to get him out of there."

• Reliever Zach Putnam tweaked a leg muscle while stretching on Friday and will be out of action for a couple of days. Putnam last pitched on March 6.
"He did something yesterday after I talked to you guys, so he got scratched," said Ventura of Putnam. "He'll just get re-evaluated. He said he tweaked something stretching in the weight room. It's not his arm, it's his leg."
• Catcher Rob Brantly was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners, leaving the White Sox with 54 players in Major League camp and dropping the 40-man roster down to 39.
Brantly, 26, hit .121 over 33 at-bats for the White Sox last season with one homer and six RBIs. He dipped down the depth chart with the free-agent acquisitions of Alex Avila and Dioner Navarro.
